David Amayo

MY PROFILE My name is David Omondi Amayo. I am a holder of Master of Arts in English  and Linguistics (Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA:3.72) and a Bachelor of Education Arts in English and Literature (GPA 3.52) - subjects I have taught and assessed for eighteen (18) years with stellar performance in the national examinations. Currently, I am pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in International Curricula at Riara University. My admission number is 24ZAD110143. The title of the course and the description of the units therein were not only an attraction to me, but also spoke to my dream of becoming an international teacher. As a fresh student of Certificate In International Curricula (CTIC), my main goal is to ultimately graduate with a Diploma in Teaching International Curricula with the solid aim of inspiring, reforming and transforming lives by applying the best practices in teaching and learning. I aim to become a global teacher who can fit in the modern classroom. I expect to be an active student who will punctually attend all the lectures and do all the assessments. I also expect quality and insightful engagement with my lecturers and peers on matters international pedagogical content knowledge. My professional journey began way back in 2003 when I got recruited as an expatriate teacher by the Republic of the Seychelles. In this foreign country, I worked for four years before I came back to serve my country. Culture shock was my greatest challenge when I first stepped into the Seychelloise classroom. Before the lesson began, I had to negotiate with the learners to sit down and listen to a black man whom they wanted to touch and see whether they could get stained. That done, of course with a promise to tell them a true story about Africa, I began to call the lesson attendance register only to discover that boys had female surnames. Upon enquiry, I learnt that Seychelles being a matriarchal society, women were the heads of the families and so children acquired the surname from their mothers. Shock of shocks, when the students embarked on talking about their families, it emerged that in most families, children were sired by different fathers who visited the country as tourists. Lo and behold, to them it felt classy and prestigious to share a mother and have a sibling whose father was a tourist who had visited from Britain, America or Austarlia. In this lesson, I was rated one of the most effective classroom managers since I managed to have the students introduce themselves and the fact that they could write the lesson date in their notebooks was an achievement While teaching the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curriculum, From this, I developed an avid interest in the multiple intelligences exhibited by learners, and my facilitation of learning finds differentiated and learner-centred strategies indispensable. My passion towards teaching and learning propelled me to enrol for a professional Development course that will enable me to handle various international curricula and make me a global teacher. These experiences inform my strong belief that no student is unable to learn any concepts in life, and that approaches and methods that passivise the learner impede learning. My philosophy is to create a learner-friendly environment that empowers the learners to grow in all aspects I am an empathic listener and a dependable team player. I am an accredited Cambridge examiner of English as a First and second language, and a test developer. The administrative position I currently hold  in a densely populated school has honed my human-resource management and leadership skills in a multicultural space. While holding this position, I developed a school disciplinary policy and procedures document that is instrumental in the student behaviour management. Listening to orations and following judicial proceedings are my hobbies. These  showcase battles of wits which I find captivating. That I like reading written judgements and watching classical comedy series could be some things unique about me.
