Job description

Role & Responsibilities

  1. Teach IB MYP Design and IB DP Design Technology with a strong focus on product design and physical design solutions.
  2. Develop students’ design thinking, creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and practical problem-solving skills.
  3. Guide students through the complete design cycle, including research, analysis, ideation, design development, prototyping, testing, evaluation, and refinement.
  4. Teach product design principles, materials, manufacturing processes, mechanisms, structures, ergonomics, sustainability, and functional design.
  5. Plan and conduct practical design sessions involving sketching, model-making, prototyping, fabrication, experimentation, and testing.
  6. Guide students in identifying real-world problems and developing innovative, functional, and user-centred product solutions.
  7. Teach students how to develop design specifications, generate and evaluate design ideas, create prototypes, and refine products based on testing and feedback.
  8. Develop concept-driven and inquiry-based learning experiences aligned with IB principles and approaches to teaching and learning.
  9. Prepare students for IB MYP and DP assessments, including design projects, portfolios, investigations, and internal assessment requirements.
  10. Design meaningful assessments, product-development projects, design challenges, practical tasks, and real-world applications.
  11. Provide regular feedback and use assessment data to support student progress and improve design outcomes.
  12. Encourage participation in design competitions, innovation challenges, exhibitions, maker activities, and interdisciplinary projects.
  13. Integrate sustainability, responsible material selection, environmental considerations, ethics, and real-world applications into product design.
  14. Support students in developing independent research, communication, collaboration, reflection, and project-management skills.
  15. Maintain effective design studio/workshop practices, including safe and responsible use of tools, equipment, machinery, and materials.
  16. Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum planning, interdisciplinary learning, and project-based initiatives.
  17. Participate in departmental meetings, professional development, school events, exhibitions, and academic initiatives.
  18. Maintain accurate academic records, assessment documentation, student portfolios, design journals, and curriculum-related documentation.

Preferred Candidate Profile

  1. Master’s/Bachelor’s Degree in Product Design, Industrial Design, Design Technology, Engineering, Architecture, or a relevant discipline.
  2. B.Ed. preferred/required as per applicable requirements.
  3. Minimum 5–7+ years of relevant teaching or professional experience, preferably in IB schools.
  4. Strong knowledge of IB MYP Design and/or IB DP Design Technology.
  5. Strong background in product design, industrial design, design technology, or related practical design disciplines.
  6. Strong understanding of the design cycle, product development, prototyping, materials, manufacturing processes, and functional design.
  7. Hands-on experience with materials such as wood, plastics, metals, textiles, composites, or other suitable product-design materials.
  8. Practical knowledge of model-making, prototyping, fabrication, workshop practices, and product testing.
  9. Knowledge of mechanisms, structures, ergonomics, sustainability, and material selection will be an advantage.
  10. Experience with CAD, 3D modelling, 3D printing, laser cutting, or digital fabrication will be an advantage, but the primary focus should be on physical product design.
  11. Experience with inquiry-based, concept-driven, project-based, and experiential learning.
  12. Ability to design and facilitate authentic product-development projects and real-world design challenges.
  13. Strong understanding of IB assessment practices, criteria, and documentation requirements.
  14. Experience with IB MYP assessment criteria and/or DP Design Technology assessment frameworks will be an advantage.
  15. Strong classroom management, communication, collaboration, and student-engagement skills.
  16. Ability to mentor students through long-term product design projects from research and ideation through prototyping, testing, evaluation, and refinement.
  17. Candidates with IB teaching experience or relevant IB Design/Design Technology training will be preferred.
